Barrick touts hedging success -- and its plan to reduce hedging

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Here's a bunch of miscellany for you.....

Check out some excellent if brief commentary by Centennial
Precious Metals and USAGold.com proprietor Michael
Kosares, quot; The Washington Agreement Gets Messy, quot; which
analyzes Portugal's recent gold sales:

a href=http://www.usagold.com/AMK/MK-gold.htmlhttp://www.usagold.com/AMK/MK-gol...

Here are a few articles -- one from the Sunday Times in
South Africa and two from MineWeb -- that address concerns
about the recently weak performance of the South African
gold shares, which is being attributed to the strength of
the rand against the dollar:

a href=http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/2003/04/27/business/money/money01.asphttp:/...

Our friends at Swiss America have posted an article with charts
showing that the leverage in gold is not exclusively with mining
shares -- rare coins have leverage too:

a href=http://www.swissamerica.com/article.php?=SIDamp;art=03-http://www.swissa...
2003/200303271114f.txt

Swiss America's Fred Goldstein (800-289-2646 x1033,
fig@swissamerica.com) and Tim Murphy (800-289-2646 x1019
trmurphy@swissamerica.com) would be glad to talk to
anyone about it.

The latter article isn't entirely a commercial promotion,
since GATA's work is likely to become increasingly a matter
of trying to boost investment demand for precious metals
and the taking of supplies of real metal off the market.
More about that soon.

And finally here's a reminder about the spring meeting of the
Committee for Monetary Research and Education in New
York City this Thursday evening. Among the speakers will
be a former vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of
New York, the former manager of its gold vault. The agenda
for the meeting is appended. There's still time to make a
reservation. Admission is $125 and that includes a great
dinner. I'm planning to represent GATA at the meeting and
would love to see friends there. If you'd like to attend,
please call or e-mail CMRE President Elizabeth B. Currier,
whose addresses are below.
