Boris Johnson's Brexit election gamble spectacularly paid off as the Conservatives headed for their biggest victory for more than 30 years, cutting a swath through Labour heartlands.

As Mr. Johnson celebrated winning "a powerful new mandate" -- a BBC projection suggested a Conservative majority of 64 -- the electoral earthquake left Labour and the Liberal Democrats seeking new leaders.

Jeremy Corbyn announced he would not contest another election as Labour leader after the party's "very disappointing" defeat, while Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson lost her East Dunbartonshire seat to the SNP by just 149 votes.

A BBC projection at 3.30 a.m. gave the Conservatives 357 seats (up 47), vindicating Mr. Johnson's decision to seek a bigger majority to deliver Brexit. Labour was heading for 201 seats (down 66), SNP 55 (up 17), and the Lib Dems 13 (up one). ...
