Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Here's some great commentary that touches on
GATA and that was set down almost offhandedly
today at the forum of that invaluable Internet
site, USAGold.com, by its proprietor, Michael
Kosares, also proprietor of Centennial Precious
Metals in Denver.

Though it is a humble beginning, it is encouraging to see
physical gold beginning to show some signs of leading this
market forward. I thought it interesting that the market
moved strongly to the upside this morning/early afternoon
as London moved to session close on option expiry day.

It seems tha the speculators were just waiting to get that
and U.S. options expirations out of the way Monday. The
market had to dance around the double whammy this week,
but when it emerged, it emerged in a big way.

Would you say that the Barrick announcement is a sure
sign of the dog regaining control of its tail?

At the beginning of the year I said this would be the year
of the breakout. The monumental events of the past few
days not only confirm this; they show me that there are
many who have learned their lessons well at places like
this site.

I can remember a time when many of us questioned
whether it was a good or bad idea to expose the
management of the gold price (no matter who was doing
it and why). Now we see that that knowledge has been
turned jujitsu-style against gold's attackers.

People not only rallied to gold's cause; they began to
thank the bears publicly for providing physical at
bargain-basement prices.

As for the present situation, it wouldn't suprise me in
the least to learn that Barrick's bankers had put the
hurt on that mining firm -- though I don't know by any
stretch that banker angst was what prompted Barrick
Chairman Peter Munk's very strange turnaround.

Add to this that U.S.-based mining operations, not the
South African and Australian variety, are the ones most
likely to benefit directly from the current dollar
paradigm, and a picture begins to merge why Barrick --
whose primary operation is in Nevada -- might renounce
hedging. The article linked at USAGold's News & Views
Online, quoting Harmony CEO Bernard Swanepoel, is
enlightening in that regard. ...

We have it on good aurthority that premiums are starting
to advance on common bullion coins. This advance,
according to my source, is not due to any single large
buyer of gold coins but to demand momentum building
among gold investors in the United States in general. This,
my souce says, is "indicative of this move being the real
thing."

Coincidentally, I also hae received word from another
contact that the premiums on pre-1933 gold could move up
rapidly for the same reasons, particularly the U.S. $20
gold pieces.
