Treasury secretary says Iran talks involve shifting oil invoicing to dollars

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that U.S. talks with Iran include having the longtime American adversary join the dollar system and invoicing its oil sales in the greenback.
"We're seeing in the Iranian negotiations the Iranians will be invoicing in dollars," Bessent said in an interview on CNBC. He said that's one element of a coming, broader reassertion of the U.S. currency's dominance in the global economy.

Bessent said that "dollar dominance is essential" in response to a question about his views on the currency. "Everything we are doing is pushing the dollar."
"Venezuela is going to be invoicing in dollars. They're coming back on to the dollar system," Bessent said. Under the previous sanctions regime, prior to the removal of President Nicolas Maduro, "they were not allowed" to transact in the U.S. currency, he noted.
"They were selling discounted oil to China and not getting dollars," he said. Now, "the dollar is going to be the centerpiece of their trade." ...
