Having gotten rid of Australia's national gold
reserves at historic low prices just before the
gold price turned up, the Reserve Bank of
Australia discovered this year that it still
had about A$19 million worth of the awful
stuff: 5,850 gold coins now believed to have
significant numismatic value, acquired prior to
1976, when Australian law, as the bank's
announcement puts it too delicately, "required
that members of the public exchange gold coins
for Australian currency."
Who, one may wonder, did better on those
transactions -- the people who surrendered the
coins now believed to have such numismatic
value as to merit auction, or the Reserve Bank
of Australia, the point of whose own infinite
currency is precisely never to be scarce like
gold?
The auction will be held at the Old Treasury
Building in Melbourne on Tuesday and Wednesday
this week, November 29 and 30, and you can

And that's where longtime GATA supporter Ian

writes sardonically that the Reserve Bank seems
to be "celebrating gold's 18-year breakout into
new bull territory by availing people of one
last golden opportunity to safeguard themselves
against boneheaded money management by
governments and reserve banks the world over."
Many of the coins on the auction list, Ian writes,
have minimum bids that are barely above the spot
price of their weight in gold; others are truly
rare.
"I will attend the auction," Ian continues, "and
will buy on behalf of any GATA supporter who
would like a piece of this action. I will not
charge any commission for this work. GATA
supporters will pay only the auction price, the
auctioneer's commission, postage, and insurance.
I will also buy one of these coins on behalf of
GATA supporters, suitably mount it, and donate
it to GATA for its archive."
