Is gold cabal wrecking South Africa''s currency?

Section: Daily Dispatches

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Harmony Gold today issued a wonderfully encouraging
statement by email to a half dozen GATA supporters who
had written to the company in support of our cause.
The statement is being posted all over the Internet
already, so I'll attach it below.

It is important for a few reasons.

First, it shows that Harmony believes in its product
and is willing to take a leadership position in the
industry and the developing world.

Second, it promises a good reception for GATA Chairman
Bill Murphy and our consultant and litigant, Reginald
H. Howe, as they prepare to travel to South Africa this
month.

And third, it shows that all of us can make a difference,
no matter our position or resources. Even people who
can't afford to make a financial contribution can make a
contribution of activism, and the latter contribution can
be just as substantial.

That was GATA's point when we were founded in 1999. We
believed that a free market in gold could be
established and gold restored to its traditional
monetary function if only gold investors, the gold
industry and its employees, and those who believe in
free markets stopped complaining idly to themselves and
started to DO something to correct the injustice we saw.

If we can get the active support of South Africa -- the
industry, the workers, and the government -- we can
sustain our lawsuit and expand our agitation against
the manipulators, and, I'm confident, win out. With
South Africa behind us, we'll be impossible to stop,
and the justice of our cause will become clearer
throughout the world.

So thanks to Harmony for its support, and thanks so
much to those friends who wrote to the company on
behalf of our cause.

Remember always: We are not alone, and all of us can
do SOMETHING!

CHRIS POWELL, Secretary/Treasurer
Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee Inc.

STATEMENT BY HARMONY GOLD, JANUARY 10, 2001

Dear GATA Supporters:

Thank you for your e-mails on the good work that has
been undertaken by GATA over the last few years.

As you know, our company has been supportive of GATA
and similar interventions that have the best interests
of the gold industry at heart.

We have assisted in various methods of support in the
GATA initiatives.

Harmony, as one of the four unhedged major producers
left in the gold mining industry, has a lot to gain
from an increased gold price. Any initiative that can
assist in correcting the imbalance in the gold price
needs all the support we can give it.

Representatives of the company will be meeting with
representatives from GATA during the Cape Town Indaba
conference to discuss their initiatives further.

I do hope the above assists in indicating our support
of this important initiative from GATA.

Please contact me should you have any additional
queries.

Regards,

Ferdi Dippenaar
