MineWeb.com, the South Africa-based Internet site
devoted to persuading the international mining
industry that it should pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain because central banks have only
the most altruistic indifference to the price of
precious metals, was taken over today by indigenous
pro-gold forces.
The coup was manifested in a remarkable essay at
the site by Sandy McGregor, a director of the
Capetown investment house Allan Gray Ltd. The
essay, titled "Pegging the Dollar or Peglegging
Gold," asserted the following:
1) Gold has gone from being merely a commodity
to being an international currency again.
2) "Under the Washington agreement, the European
central banks agreed to co-ordinate their sales and
gold has been on an upward trend ever since."
3) Currency exchange rates are failing to restore a
balance to international trade "because Asian central
banks have been intervening massively to keep their
currencies pegged against the dollar. Policy makers
are preventing markets from efficiently pricing the
exchange rate of the dollar."
Of course all this is GATA's premise: that gold is a
currency and central banks act in concert to regulate
the gold price as well as exchange rates so as to
defeat free markets all over the place.
And GATA had never even heard of McGregor until now!
