In an Australian first, men are having tiny grains of
gold inserted into their prostates to help doctors
treat their cancer.
Three pieces of 24-carat gold similar in size to a
grain of rice are inserted into the prostate, using an
ultrasound probe through the rectum.
A trial of 10 men is under way at the Ballarat-Austin
Radiation Oncology Centre, with results expected in
a year.
Consultant radiation oncologist Andrew See said
that while the procedure was not pleasant, men
were happy to suffer a little pain if it made their
cancer treatment safer.
The gold acts like a global positioning device to
allow doctors to target the prostate with radiation
more accurately.
"These are essentially markers for us to track where
the prostate is -- it exerts absolutely no therapeutic
effect on its own," Dr See said.
"We put three solid gold seeds into the prostate a
week or two before the men actually undergo their
radiation treatment.
"The seeds act a bit like a global positioning device
so when they come in and have their radiotherapy,
we can accurately track where the prostate is on
every day of their seven-week treatment."
The gold allows doctors to get to within 1 or 2
millimetres of the prostate, whereas they were
previously getting to within 3 to 5 millimetres at best,
Dr See said. "Although it sounds like a margin of
error, this does translate to a big improvement in
our treatments."
Previously, prostate cancer patients ran the risk of
nearby organs being affected by the treatment.
The pieces of gold are ribbed like the tread of a car
tyre so that they graft into the prostate.
"Once they're in, they're in for life," Dr See said.
Doctors have not identified any adverse impacts so
far from the gold.
Dr See learnt about the technique while working in
the United States and said it was fairly common there.
"We're the first in the country to actually implement
it," he said.
