Fundraising campaign captures matching contribution and GATA presses on

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Thanks to more than a hundred people, GATA has met the fundraising challenge set for us a month ago by Stefan Gleason of Money Metals Exchange when he pledged a $5,000 contribution if we could match it with contributions from our supporters.

Without that powerful incentive, our campaign almost certainly would have ended unimpressively, given the demoralization, cynicism, and cowardice that still permeate the monetary metals mining business, as well as the cowardice of mainstream financial news organizations.

Special thanks also to Fay Durrant of the Fay J Winery in Texarkana, Texas, whose creation of GATA-label wine and donation of three cases for a drawing for our fundraising campaign's donors added much excitement to the campaign. Winners of the three cases will be selected and notified in the next few days.

The GATA-label wine has sparked so much interest that we plan to begin marketing it through the Fay J Winery so that our supporters can help sustain us even as they toast to the rise of free markets in the monetary metals.

When GATA was founded in 1999 no one involved with the organization anticipated that market rigging by governments would intensify, not lessen, and that the strugle against it would be so difficult. But this rigging can prevail only through secrecy and deception, and thanks in part to GATA's work, the world is slowly becoming aware of it. We begin the new year with gratitude, optimism, and the belief, stronger than ever, that our effort is crucial to individual liberty, limited and transparent government, and fair dealing among nations.

So we press on, borrowing as we often do from Arthur Hugh Clough:

Say not the struggle nought availeth,
The labor and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke concealed,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back through creeks and inlets making
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light.
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly,
But westward, look, the land is bright.
